ALP attack on Bates is shameful: Newman – Ninemsn

Ros Bates has gone on sick leave, amid controversy about her son Ben Gommers’ relationship with sidelined transport department director-general Michael Caltabiano.

The Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) is investigating Mr Gommers’ appointment to a well paid job in Mr Caltabiano’s department.

And Mr Caltabiano is facing an ethics committee probe about whether he misled a budget estimates hearing about the nature of his prior relationship with Mr Gommers.

Premier Campbell Newman has told parliament Ms Bates is seriously ill after developing an infection following a September 13 operation on her shoulder.

He said that operation had included the removal of more than a third of her collarbone and part of her shoulderblade.

“At the same time she had an intravenous catheter inserted into her arm and threaded into the largest vein in her heart for intensive high-dose antibiotic therapy for six weeks,” Mr Newman, who even tabled a photo of the minister, said.

Labor MPs interjected, saying the premier was not answering their question – to name the minister who’d advised Ms Bates to take sick leave.

“These people are shameful,” Mr Newman retorted.

“The minister has been seriously ill. Myself, the deputy premier, the treasurer and the attorney-general, had wanted her to take leave.”

Mr Newman said Ms Bates would be available to answer any questions the ethics committee or CMC had.

The arts minister went on sick leave on Thursday last week, the same day Mr Caltabiano stepped aside on full pay, pending the ethics committee probe.

On Tuesday, Treasurer Tim Nicholls told AAP he and other senior cabinet ministers last week advised Ms Bates to take sick leave – before a doctor’s certificate was issued.

Mr Nicholls also said Mr Gommers, who is being treated for depression, had been treated appallingly.

Mr Caltabiano had told a budget estimates committee hearing that his relationship with Mr Gommers was personal, not professional.

But subsequent media reports said Mr Caltabiano was listed alongside Mr Gommers on the register for Entree Vous, a lobby firm previously owned by Ms Bates.
