nsnbc : Alleged Brazilian drug kingpin Jose Esteyman Poveda a.k.a. Provaezano has been captured in Colombia. Brazilian police and Interpol were looking for Poveda who is a suspected leader of a major international drug trafficking group. Poveda has also been linked to Colombia’s Los Urabenos.
Colombian authorities and Interpol cooperated in capturing Jose Esteyman Poveda on Saturday. Poveda is allegedly also a member of Colombia’s right-wing neo-paramilitaries Los Urabenos, a successor organization of the discontinued AUC. Brazilian and Colombian authorities as well as Interpol have been searching for Poveda who is considered to be a leading narcotics trafficker.
Poveda was arrested in the densely populated Lijaca neighborhood on the northern outskirts of the Colombian capital Bogota. The arrest was carried out by members of Colombia’s national anti-narcotics unit with support from Interpol.
Police said Poveda will be charged with trafficking of narcotics in the Cundinamarca and Meta departments as well as with international alliances to traffickers in Bolivia and Brazil and the control of cocaine-smuggling routes.
Los Urabenos, a right-wing neo-paramilitary organization also known as Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia (AGC), emerged amid the demobilization of paramilitaries under the government of Alvaro Uribe from 2003 to 2006, in a process that offered legal benefits to those demobilized.
Widely considered as right-wing neo-paramilitaries who especially threaten populations traditionally controlled by the leftist FARC-EP, the Colombian government appreciates to designate Los Urabenos as BarCrim, or purely criminals.
Both the Colombian government, the FARC-EP, the USA, the UN and others perceive nneo-paramilitaries and drug traffickers as one of the greatest threats to peace and stability in Colombia today.
