Alleged Black Saturday arsonist on trial

A trial has begun for a man charged with causing the deaths of 10 people in a bushfire in Victoria’s east on Black Saturday.

Brendan James Sokaluk, 42, is alleged to have started a fire near Churchill on February 7, 2009 that, fanned by strong winds, spread to destroy more than 150 houses and killed 10 people.

Prosecutor Ray Elston, SC, told the Victorian Supreme Court that Sokaluk started a fire about 1.30pm in a blue gum plantation near Churchill when the temperature was 44 degrees on a day of total fire ban.

Fanned by winds that at times gusted to over 60km/h, it spread quickly.

Mr Elston said the wind changed about 6pm and the fire hit several towns, killing 10 people.

Sokaluk’s car was seen driving on the road next to where the fire started. It then broke down on the road, it is alleged.

Sokaluk claimed he was on his way to a wedding, Mr Elston said.

This was a lie, he told the court.

Sokaluk has pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of arson causing death.

The trial before Justice Paul Coghlan is continuing.
