Allconnex break-up ratified

Legislation to finalise the dismantling of southeast Queensland water distributor and retailer Allconnex has passed parliament.

Gold Coast City Council parted ways with Allconnex in July last year amid criticism that water prices had increased.

Soon after, the Redland City and Logan City Councils also decided to withdraw.

The three councils are re-establishing their own water businesses.

A Queensland parliamentary committee reviewed legislation to finalise the Allconnex split and to allow councils to re-establish their own water businesses.

The bill was passed on Tuesday night with the supported of both Labor and the Liberal National Party (LNP).

The legislation will give the remaining southeast Queensland distributor-retailers greater clarity on pricing and decision-making roles.

Furthermore the Queensland Competition Authority will oversee price monitoring of the new council water businesses.

LNP leader Campbell Newman said the party would amalgamate the four bulk water entities into one to reduce the cost of supplying water, if it wins government at the March 24 election.
