All lanes on the Hume Highway have reopened after a good samaritan died alongside a woman whose car he was trying to start in the NSW southern highlands.
A tow truck driver, believed to be aged in his 40s, had gone to help the woman after her car broke down on the Hume Highway, 2km south of Mittagong.
Both were hit by a southbound truck and died at the scene.
The double fatality happened about 12.40pm (AEDT) on Wednesday, police said.
The man driving the truck stopped at the scene and was taken to hospital suffering shock.
He is helping police with their inquiries and will undergo mandatory blood and urine testing.
All southbound lanes of the highway reopened south of Mittagong just before 8pm, the Department of Transport said.
