All Iran neighbors will benefit from JCPOA: Mogherini

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini says Iran’s neighboring countries will benefit from a “win-win” nuclear agreement reached between the Islamic Republic and six global powers last July.

“The full integration of Iran in the international community and the global economy will benefit not just Iran but potentially all its neighbors, including Armenia,” Mogherini said in an interview with Mediamax ahead of her planned visit to Armenia on March 1.

She added that the nuclear agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was yet another confirmation that it will not only benefit Iran and the P5+1 countries but the entire region and the whole world.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, France, Britain, China and Russia – plus Germany started to implement the JCPOA on January 16.

After JCPOA went into effect, all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran by the European Union, the Security Council and the US were lifted. Iran has, in return, put some limitations on its nuclear activities.

The nuclear agreement was signed on July 14, 2015 following two and a half years of intensive talks.

Mogherini emphasized that the JCPOA was proof that the sides “truly reached a win-win solution.”

“The deal has made the Middle East, the Caucuses and Central Asia a safer place, and it can start to foster more positive regional dynamics,” she said.

She added that she plans to pay a visit to Tehran together with a number of other European Commissioners to exchange views with senior Iranian officials about mutual relations and the latest developments in the Middle East and the broader region.

On February 15, the EU foreign policy chief held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in the Belgian capital of Brussels.
