THE deputy leaders of the Liberals, the Greens and Labor are set to rock the election campaign by programming tonight’s edition of Rage, tarting at 11.20pm.
ABC viewers got a taste for what’s to come this morning with a one-hour special which featured Anthony Albanese, Julie Bishop and Adam Bandt selecting their favourite tunes.
Each of the deputies have picked 20 of their favourite songs and will share anecdotes about hearing the songs for the first time, live gigs they have attended and run-ins with various musicians.
Mr Albanese’s selections include tracks by The Pogues and PJ Harvey, Mr Bandt chose songs by the White Stripes and the Chemical Brothers, and Ms Bishop opted for Madonna’s Like a Virgin and Beyonce’s All the Single Ladies.
It’s a first for Rage, but the move has also prompted a bit of rage from viewers on the long-running show’s Facebook page.
One respondent, Justine Stewart, questioned whether the politicians should have been given the free airtime, one week out from a federal election.
“This whole thing is a joke – these people want to run the country and thanks to this kind of shallow coverage that turns politics into entertainment … we’re going to end up with the (government) we deserve,” she wrote.
A social media editor for the program responded that she was confusing Rage with “a hard-hitting affairs program”.
“We’ll provide the fun and let others do the investigating.”
