Al-Shabab announces bombing campaign

Al-Shabab military spokesman Sheikh Abdi Aziz Abu Mus’ab told reporters on Saturday that al-Shabab fighters have prepared a spate of bombers as part of their campaign to drive the weak Western-backed transitional government out of power and force the African Union soldiers out of the country.

Abu Mus’ab said that the car bombing of a Mogadishu police station on Friday was the beginning of a string of bombing attacks that al-Shabab fighters plan to carry out in the Somali capital in the next few days.

Meanwhile, Somali security forces discovered two luxury cars laden with explosives near Mogadishu’s busy central KM4 neighborhood on Saturday.

“Our security team found two vehicles with explosive material inside at Mogadishu’s KM4 roundabout today. Three al-Shabab members have been arrested in connection with the finding,” security intelligence commander Khalif Ahmed Ereg said.

Somalia has been without an effective central government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

The weak Western-backed transitional government in Mogadishu has been battling al-Shabab fighters for the past five years and is propped up by a 12,000-strong African Union force consisting of troops from Uganda, Burundi, and Djibouti.
