‘Al-Qaeda bomber, CIA double agent’

American officials said on Tuesday the man delivered the bomb to the US government instead of sneaking it onto the plane on the anniversary of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden’s death, The New York Times reported.

The United States says over the past three years, al-Qaeda bomb makers in Yemen have developed three devices in hopes of attacking airplanes in the skies above the US – but all three plots have failed.

The al-Qaeda network planned to destroy the US-bound airliner using an innovative bomb. The man in question departed Yemen, traveled through the UAE and gave the bomb and information about al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to the CIA, the report adds.

According to the report, the double agent infiltrated the al-Qaeda network and volunteered for the mission after he learnt of the plot and received weeks of special training in Yemen.

US media believes the man whose identity is still unknown was not directly recruited by the CIA. It is believed he has connections with the US spy agency through the Saudi security organization.

Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee Peter King said intelligence officials feared the excess of the leak would discourage foreign intelligence services from cooperating with the US on risky missions in the future.

National Security Contributor Fran Townsend also expressed concerns over the leak, saying it is possible that the al-Qaeda terrorist group is currently involved in several other bombing plots.
