Al Jazeera reporter expelled from China

While the domestic media operates under tight state control, overseas news
organisations are technically free to cover stories without interference
from the authorities. In practise, large parts of China are off-limits to
the foreign press, including all of Tibet, while journalists are routinely
harassed while operating outside Beijing. In recent days, a number of
foreign reporters have been roughed up while attempting to travel to the
home village of the blind dissident Chen Guangcheng.

Last week, 12 overseas journalists trying to reach Mr Chen in the Beijing
hospital room he is under heavy guard in were warned they risked losing
their press cards if they did not follow Chinese reporting rules. Mr Chen
said today he would continue fighting human rights abuses in China, even if
he does travel as expected to the US.
