Al-Jaafari: ‎Syria is Battling ‎Terrorism on the World’s Behalf

Nov 20, 2013 – New York,

(SANA)- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari stressed on Tuesday that the Syrian government is combating the Qatari- and Saudi-funded takfiri terrorist groups on behalf of the whole world. Addressing the UN General Assembly Social, Humanitarian Cultural Affairs Committee (Third Committee) prior to voting on a Saudi-proposed draft resolution against Syria under the title ‘Human Rights Condition in the Syrian Arab Republic’.

Al-Jaafari lashed out at the Saudi, Qatari and Turkish regimes as being fully to blame for the continuation of terrorist acts that target civilians, military personnel and infrastructure in Syria. “For the Saudi delegation to submit on behalf of a set of its allies a draft resolution criticizing the human rights situation in Syria is a stunning paradox in itself given the black record the Saudi regime has in this regard,” he said. “The Saudi regime is the last one that can talk about human rights,” al-Jaafari added, stressing that “the Saudi delegation had better acquaint the audience with the miserable human rights condition in their very country.”

“It is no secret that the Saudi regime is a major side of stoking the situation in Syria and hindering a peaceful and political solution,” said Al-Jaafari. This position of the Saudi regime, he added, will only lead to the continuation of human rights violations in Syria by the takfiri armed terrorist groups. He lambasted the Saudi regime for having favoured the route of feeding violence and bloodshed in Syria and influencing the armed groups not to go to the Geneva conference.

The Syrian ambassador to the UN condemned the “fatwas of terrorism” issued by Saudi Arabia calling for “jihad” in Syria being “an occupied land” while ignoring the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestine, Golan and parts of Lebanon since years. “We have the right to ask: how could Saudi Arabia, which is not a member of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, propose a draft resolution against Syria, which is a member of the Covenant since 1969?” wondered Al-Jaafari.

He highlighted the human rights violations committed against women in Saudi Arabia who are deprived of any of citizenship rights, including travelling alone or driving cars, in addition to preventing people from participating in parliamentary, political and judicial institutions. “It is a surrealistic scene particularly if we bear in mind that the Syrian Parliament, which was established in June, 1919 included women, and if we call that Damascus University has had women doctor graduating since 1920,” said Al-Jaafari. “And now after almost 100 years, the Saudi regime comes to teach us lessons in democracy and human rights promotion,” he added.

Al-Jaafari pointed out that the painful crisis in Syria has worsened due to the unilateral economic measures imposed by the draft resolution makers, underlining the various grave violations against the Syrians by the takfiri mercenaries in terms of eating human livers and hearts, killing children and randomly firing mortar shells on cities, stealing national resources and destroying infrastructure.

He stressed that the Syrian government is doing its best to alleviate the impacts of the crisis on the Syrian people out of its humanitarian responsibilities and national and international obligations. Al-Jaafari wondered at the resolution makers’ disregard of the deteriorating security, social, health and economic situation in the camps where displaced Syrians are staying in neighboring countries.

He lashed out at the Saudi regime for violating rules of Article 2 of paragraph 7 of the UN Charter which prevents interference of member state in the internal affairs of other sovereign countries, calling on all the member states to vote against the draft resolution and against the Saudi and someone else interference in Syria’s internal affairs.

In another statement following the vote on the draft resolution, al-Jaafari reiterated Syria’s unequivocal condemnation of the use of the chemical weapons and held the Saudi and Qatari regimes responsible for sending these weapons to the armed terrorist groups in Syria and ordering them to use them to blame the Syrian government. Al-Jaafari highlighted that Syria has repeatedly warned against the danger of the armed terrorist groups’ use of chemical weapons, noting that his country sent official letters to the Security Council and the General Assembly and demanded investigation into incidents of chemical weapons use in the country.

He wondered how could the Saudi regime be interested in protecting human rights in the Arab region, while at the same time it has refused to receive displaced Syrians on its land and its forces have suppressed peaceful protests in eastern Saudi Arabia and recently planned to expel over 5 million foreign workers in five days. Al-Jaafari stressed that the Saudi draft resolution is the last thing the Syrians need now to end their crisis, calling for support to hold the Geneva 2 international conference and for a Syrian-led dialogue among the Syrians.

He asserted that one of the most important factors for the success of this conference is to put pressure on Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey who seek to maintain the militarization of the crisis in Syria. Iran’s Representative to UN called for stopping the armed terrorist groups’ violations in Syria as these groups endanger security and stability in the region. He also called for supporting a peaceful political dialogue and halting violence in Syria.

The Russian representative, for his part, called on the international community to exert further efforts to reach a diplomatic political solution to the crisis in Syria, noting that the Russian-U.S. initiative necessitates unconditional support. He criticized the Saudi draft resolution, particularly that it places the full responsibility for the current situation in the country on the Syrian government alone, asserting that the “opposition” also bears responsibility.

In turn, China’s UN representative called on all Syrian sides to take effective measures to solve the crisis peacefully. The Brazilian representative condemned the continued flow of weapons into Syria and the unilateral measures imposed by some countries on it. Thirteen countries voted against the resolution, including Russia, China, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Belarus, Zimbabwe, Uzbekistan, Iran, the Democratic Republic of Korea, Bolivia and Ecuador, in addition to Syria. While 46 countries abstained from voting, 123 countries voted in favor, among those were the US, Israel, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
