Air India pilots go on hunger strike

The Indian Pilots’ Guild (IPG) said on Saturday that a group of ten of its members has gone on hunger strike “to protest against discrimination and exploitation by the Air India management.”

“We want this strike to end as soon as possible, but we will not come back to work till our 101 sacked colleagues are reinstated,” said an IPG leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The first group of ten pilots has started the protest action, he stated, adding that their family members and other striking pilots have also joined them.

Air India is grappling with problems due to daily losses of about two million US dollars, rising fuel costs, increased competition, and labor disputes.

In April, the Indian government approved a debt restructuring plan and announced that it would allocate $5.9 billion to the airline over the next eight years.
