nsnbc : Air France, on Saturday, announced that it canceled 20 percent of its flights. The announcement was made on the fourth day of a strike by flight attendants.
The French flag carrier announced that it expected the 20% cancellation of flights to continue throughout Sunday and that other delays cannot be ruled out.
Air France explains the cancellations and delays with “difficulties with the composition of crews” which could “also lead to limits on the number of passengers per flight for security reasons”. Regulations dictate that there has to be one flight attendant for every 50 passengers on board.
Unions representing good and well 50 percent of the personnel called for the strike on Wednesday after talks between the airline and the unions about renewing a collective labor accord on rules, pay and promotions that expires in October broke down. Air France’s management insists on limiting the extension of the agreement to 17 months, whereas unions demand an extension for between three and five years.
The airline has also been affected by a series of pilot strikes. On June 11 through 14, Air France pilots lifted a national wave of strikes and protests against controversial new labor laws in France to new altitudes when they joined the strikes during the UEFA Soccer Championship hosted by France. The airline estimated that the stoppage cost it some €40 million ($45 million).
