‘Afghans demand trial of US maniac’

On March 11, Sergeant Robert Bales opened fire on Afghan civilians inside their homes in Kandahar’s Panjwaii district, leaving at least 17 people — mostly women and children — dead and several others injured.

According to a fact-finding mission set up by the Afghan parliament, however, at least 20 US soldiers were involved in the killing.

According to the head of the mission, after probing the circumstances and speaking to witnesses and locals, it was concluded that the crime could not have been committed by a single soldier.

This is while the US military insists that only one soldier was involved in the massacre.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Mohammad Azizi, political commentator, to share his opinion on this issue.

The following is a transcript of the interview:

Press TV: Discrepancies with the facts, no charges for the supposed culprit, would you say that the United States is scrambling somehow to find a way out of this mess?

Azizi: There is no question that they will be able to run out of it. Innocent Afghans have been killed and someone is responsible for it, be it one or more than one people.

And the demand of the Afghan people is very clear that they want the culprit to be put on trial and there should be a fair trial so that we do understand that okay- who killed the 16 people in Kandahar? Was it one person or more than one person and at the same time why did he kill? What was the motive behind it?

Because the Afghan government and the Afghan people are expecting that there will be a long-term strategic partnership between the two countries and of course by 2014 if we are going to have more of US forces on ground in Afghanistan, how responsibly they will behave when they will be here in Afghanistan?

Press TV: Mr. Azizi, the Qur’an burning incident and now this, it is not anti-American sentiments anymore as it seems in Afghanistan. It seems to be more of an American loathing attitude amongst the Afghans now. What would this all mean for the future of the presence of foreign forces there?

Azizi: One thing has to be very clear that Afghanistan is still a fragile country in terms of its security situation. The Afghan government [does] need the support of international community and particularly that of the United States. There is no doubt about it.
However, what is important is that we have to have some redlines and we have to have a framework within which we should have the support of the international forces.

As you can see the recent speech of President Hamid Karzai explicitly said that if the situation remains volatile like this and if the American soldiers will be behaving in a manner that will be out of control, then of course the Afghan government as well as the Afghan people cannot afford to have this partnership with the Americans for long.

And that is why President Hamid Karzai has demanded that the security should; transition should get completed a year before the 2014, so that the Afghans do understand their abilities as well as they should have the platform in order to test themselves to take the control of the security of Afghanistan completely.
