Afghanistan War: President Hamid Karzai Wants No NATO Airstrikes On Homes, At All

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan President Hamid Karzai is taking a defiant stand against NATO airstrikes, saying the military coalition can no longer fire on homes from aircraft in any circumstance – even in defense of Afghan and foreign forces.

Karzai said at a Tuesday news conference that he reached that understanding with the coalition following last week’s airstrike in Logar province that killed 18 civilians.

NATO’s interpretation of what was agreed upon is significantly different than Karzai’s and highlights ongoing tension between the two allies.

The coalition says it agreed to restrict airstrikes against houses, but that it would still use air-delivered munitions against civilian dwellings in self-defense of troops on the ground.

Such airstrikes have brewed resentment among Afghans who feel they violate the privacy of their homes and put civilians at risk.
