Captain Christophe Schnetterle of the 93rd Mountain Artillery Regiment based in Varces died on Tuesday, the French Defense Ministry said.
Schnetterle had sustained serious injuries in the January 20 attack by an Afghan colleague in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Kapisa.
Four other French soldiers were killed in the attack.
France has begun to gradually withdraw its 3,600 troops stationed in Afghanistan and plans to leave no more than 500 forces at the end of 2014, when NATO is to end its combat mission in the war-weary nation.
But the Kapisa killings prompted French President Nicolas Sarkozy to bring forward the withdrawal date by one year.
On Tuesday, another US-led foreign soldier was killed after a bomb explosion in southern Afghanistan. The death pushes to at least 92 the number of foreign troops killed in the war so far this year.
Attacks on the US-led foreign forces rise during what is called Taliban’s annual spring offensive across Afghanistan. Foreign casualties hit record highs during the period.
