The comments came following a series coordinated attacks by the Taliban militants in the country’s capital Kabul.
According to the Afghan Interior Ministry, 19 militants were killed, while 14 policemen and nine civilians were injured in the exchange of fire between the attackers and the security forces.
“Attacks like this demonstrate why we need to be here (Afghanistan),” Crocker said.
The series of coordinated attacks of September 11, 2001 targeted New York City and the Washington, DC area, killing more than 3,000 people.
While US officials quickly blamed al-Qaeda for the attacks and later launched the so-called War on Terrorism, many analysts have cast doubts on the official account of the event.
The small scales of the plane crashes during the attacks compared to the resounding impact, the speed at which the buildings fell to ruin, and the destruction of the World Trade Center 7, which was unhit by the planes, are among the points raised by the critics of the official government account of the incident.
Under the pretext of combating terrorism, however, the US waged wars on Iraq and Afghanistan, which have claimed the lives of more than a million people.
Insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan, despite the current presence of some 130,000 US-led forces in the country.
The forces are scheduled to withdraw and hand over security operations to the Afghan Army by the end of 2014.
