The floods that inundated the densely populated Sar-e-Pul, the capital of a province with the same name, were triggered by torrential rain and left thousands of people homeless.
“The floods have killed 50 people so far, mostly women and children,” provincial governor Abdul Jabar Haqbeen said on Saturday.
“Around 59,000 people have been displaced, and dozens are still missing,” he added.
Rescue teams are searching for any possible survivors. The flash floods have affected a total of 260 villages.
Officials say 3,000 animals, including sheep and cows, have also been killed during the floods on May 20, while about 1,000 hectares of farm land had been destroyed in the provincial capital of Taloqan and six other districts.
