“Abdul Saboor, an army soldier who killed five French soldiers seven months ago, was sentenced to death at a military court on Sunday,” said Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Daulat Waziri said on Tuesday.
The convict has reportedly told security officials that he acted in retaliation after a video came to light of U-S Marines urinating on the corpses of dead Afghans.
On January 20, a man in Afghan army uniform opened fire on French soldiers at a military base in Kapisa’s Tagab district, killing up to five French forces and leaving 15 others injured.
The incident prompted the French government to suspend all training and joint combat operations with Afghan forces and hasten the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan.
The number of the so-called green-on-blue attacks, in which Afghan forces turn their weapons against foreign forces, has escalated in 2012.
At least 26 US-led soldiers have been killed in such attacks so far this year.
