Afghan massacre culprit identified

The investigation into the incident has concluded that the prime suspect is Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, a senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Friday, the Associated Press reported.

On March 11, a US soldier opened fire on Afghan civilians inside their homes in Kandahar’s Panjwaii district, leaving at least 17 people — mostly women and children — dead and several others injured.

US officials had previously announced that the suspect was a 38-year-old Army sergeant who had spent 11 years in the military.

Bales, who has been taken to Kuwait in defiance of calls from Afghan citizens and officials for his trial to be held in Afghanistan, has not yet been charged.

Earlier, the Afghan government also said that several US troops, not a lone soldier, killed the Afghan civilians. According to a fact-finding mission set up by the Afghan parliament, at least 20 US soldiers were involved in the incident.

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said earlier this week that the soldier would be brought to justice under the US military legal code and that he could face the death penalty if convicted.
