On Monday, the Pentagon chief told reporters on board his plane on the way to Kyrgyzstan that the soldier responsible for the March 11 massacre in Afghanistan would be brought to justice under the US military legal code.
Asked if the US serviceman could be sentenced to death, Panetta said, “My understanding is in these instances that could be a consideration.”
Panetta condemned the heinous incident but added that it is still unclear what may have prompted the man to murder civilians.
However, according to some Afghan government statements, several US troops, not a lone soldier, opened fire on Afghan civilians inside their homes in the district of Panjwaii, in the southern province of Kandahar on March 11, 2012.
Afghan lawmakers have called for a public trial of the US troops involved in the massacre.
“We seriously demand and expect that the government of the United States punish the culprits and try them in a public trial before the people of Afghanistan,” the lawmakers said in a statement issued on Monday.
They also condemned the “brutal and inhuman” massacre, which has triggered angry calls for an immediate withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
