Adelaide video girls were silly: Gillard

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has warned the internet can be dangerous and says five Adelaide schoolgirls who offered sexual favours in an online video were very silly.

The video featuring three students from Mitcham Girls High School has been taken down but not before it received thousands of hits, police have said.

Police have not laid charges over what they called a stunt but five girls were suspended from school.

Police also did not give details of the video but the Adelaide Now website says it showed three girls in school uniform offering sexual services in an apparent attempt to parody the viral internet campaign known as Kony 2012.

In the footage, the giggling girls said they were offering a public service that would help prevent unwanted sexual attacks on others.

Ms Gillard says it was a “very, very silly thing to do and they are now caught up in the consequences of it”.

She says the internet is changing the world in many positive ways.

“But it’s also got its dangers and that’s why this conduct was very silly by the girls involved,” she told reporters in Adelaide.

The prime minister said it was a matter for the girls, their families and the state school to work through.

She also said the federal government was working on cyber safety arrangements that would highlight dangers including cyber bullying.
