The cost of street parking in the Adelaide CBD might rise sharply under a City Council plan.

A proposed rise of about 25 per cent in charges will go before the council’s finance committee on Tuesday night.

The hourly parking rate might rise to about $4 in some areas.

Council acting CEO Neil Brown said the proposed plan was part of efforts to keep traffic moving in the city, but he conceded most drivers already parked for only short times.

“Generally they’re parking there for up to one hour, they’re not people that are hanging around and it’s just a quick move in and move out and get them through the city,” he said.
