Activists urge tough arms trade treaty

People demonstrated in front of the UN building in New York, where a conference on the future Arms Trade Treaty was supposed to be held.

On Monday, UN member states were expected to launch talks on drafting the first comprehensive arms trade treaty, but the session was not held.

It was not clear when the talks would begin.

Amnesty International Secretary General Salil Shetty told Press TV that there was a “historic opportunity to agree an international Arms Trade Treaty, which is independent, impartial, and fair and prevents arms from reaching the hands of those governments who are likely to misuse it and violate human rights.”

Meanwhile, head of Arms Control OXFAM Anna MacDonald was not optimistic about the treaty.

“Is there a risk that these arms are going to end up in the hands of warlords or human rights abusers? and if the answer is yes, then they do not allow the arms transfer to go ahead. It’s as simple as that if we put those rules into place and if governments agree to sign up to this treaty and then we have the potential to bring the arms trade under control,” she told Press TV.

“But the problem at the moment is that we don’t have any global rules on the arms trade. There is more regulation on other products like bananas rather than deadly weapons like machine guns. It’s ridiculous situation and that’s why needs to change,” she argued.

The majority of General Assembly members have voiced support for the treaty. However, the US and and its allies are resisting language that prevents weapons sales to countries.
