Activists protest NATO radar in Turkey

The rally, which was organized by Turkey Youth Union (TGB), was attended by mostly students.

Protesters chanted slogans against the US and NATO, criticizing the Turkish government for agreeing with the installation of the radar system on Turkish soil.

Late last month, the US confirmed for the first time that the controversial NATO radar base, which is part of a larger missile system in eastern Turkey, had begun operation.

Protesters have been holding similar rallies over the past months, calling on Ankara to adopt independent policies and stop taking measures that would serve the interests of certain Western countries.

Activists say the Western military alliance may use the system against Turkey’s neighboring countries.

Turkey will host the US-made radar in the Kurecik district of the eastern province of Malatya as part of a NATO missile system.

Observers say Turkey agreeing to allow the installation of the NATO missile system and its harsh stance towards Syria are among the most controversial moves taken by the Turkish government over the past year.
