Activist enters day 58 of hunger strike

Activists from all over the world are urging the Manama regime to release al-Khawaja who is now in a Bahraini military hospital after his health deteriorated a few days ago.

The rights activist, the co-founder and former president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, was arrested in April last year for participating in anti-regime protests.

Al-Khawaja is now serving a life sentence for his role in the ongoing revolution.

The deterioration of his health has caused a national and international outcry. Bahrainis have been protesting for his release for several days now.

Bahrain’s Saudi backed-forces attacked the massive protests on Friday.

Al-Khawaja’s daughter Zainab, also a human rights activist, was imprisoned as well after heading a small rally calling for the release of her father two days ago.

Last week, Amnesty International called for the “immediate and unconditional release” of al-Khawaja and other detained activists in the country.

The rights group considers al-Khawaja a “prisoner of conscience, detained solely for exercising his right to freedom of expression.”

According to Amnesty International, his conviction was based on a confession he made under duress, and no evidence was presented showing he had used or advocated violence during the mass anti-regime protests.

Bahrainis have been staging demonstrations since mid-February 2011, demanding political reform and a constitutional monarchy, a demand that later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the ruling Al Khalifa regime following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.

Scores of people have also been killed and many others have been injured in the Saudi-backed crackdown on peaceful protesters in Bahrain.

Bahraini demonstrators hold King Hamad Al Khalifa responsible for the killings during the popular uprising in the country.
