Acer touts tablets, ultrabooks, cloud at CES

Acer has come out swinging at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012, presenting the products that it hopes will bring the company ahead this year, touting ultrabooks, tablets and a new cloud service.

Acer unveiled the Aspire Timeline Ultra, representing its latest take on the ultrabook. The Aspire Timeline Ultra is slimmer and lighter than Acer’s previous version, which came out in September. The company plans to start shipping the device in the first quarter.

Acer is just the latest to commit to Intel’s ultrabook campaign, which is an answer to Apple’s successful — and similarly sleek — MacBook Air. Intel is putting a lot of money behind a push to convince consumers that this is a new product category. Industry analysts, however, are sceptical that the market can support so many new entrants.

The svelte laptop features eight hours of battery time and a two-spindle design. It is 20 millimetres thin, and sports an Intel Core i processor and a slim DVD drive.

As with many other ultrabooks, Acer boasts that its instant-on capabilities allow it to turn on in 1.5 seconds, and says that its battery life can last for several weeks when kept in its sleep mode. The company also says that you can wake up the laptop using Acer Always Connect and a remote device, like a smartphone.

Acer also unveiled the Aspire S5, which it boasts is the world’s thinnest ultrabook.

With ultrabooks looking very similar in size and shape to each other, thinness has been one of the key differentiators. Acer boasts that the device is only 15 millimetres at its maximum point.

Like the Acer Timeline Ultra, it offers an instant-on connection, allowing it to turn on within 1.5 seconds. The device will also get the same access to cloud services from AcerCloud.

It weighs less than 1.36 kilograms, and is built with a 13.3-inch LCD display. It will also have an HDMI port, USB 3.0 and a Thunderbolt connection.

The Aspire S5 will start shipping in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, chairman JT Wang wasted no time in talking up AcerCloud, a service that allows the company’s customers to sync files between a Windows-based device and Android devices.

“We’re determined to make it very successful and sustainable,” Wang said.

In July, the company acquired a cloud-services provider called iGware for US$325 million, to help it build AcerCloud.

Cloud services will play a big part in the ultrabooks, Wang said. He added that AcerCloud wouldn’t have worked without its Always Connect technology. AcerCloud will get three apps to start: Clear.fi Photo, Clear.fi Media and AcerCloud Docs.

It’s unclear how Acer’s proprietary file-sharing service will fare against services like Dropbox, which work independently of proprietary vendors. Other major technology companies, such as Apple and Amazon, have already invested heavily in cloud services.

On the tablet front, Acer unveiled a new Iconia Tab tablet, featuring a screen resolution of 1920×1080 (1080p).

Typically, tablet screen resolutions top out at 1280×800, but, thanks to the faster speed of quad-core processors (Acer didn’t reveal which quad-core CPU the new tablet would be using), look for high-res screens like this (and even higher) to become a trend over the next year.

The success of these new devices, however, will depend on the quantity and quality of apps that actually take advantage of the advanced quad-core architecture. If we don’t see tons of games that actually push the limits of graphical fidelity on the Android platform, and, if when using these powerful devices we don’t actually feel a demonstrable difference in speed, it won’t matter how fast the processors are on paper. The proof will, as they say, be in the pudding. Hopefully, Acer and its partners are on top of this.

No other info, including price, date or additional features, were announced, but hopefully we’ll get our hands on details soon.
