Academi continues in Blackwater shoes

Blackwater was the target of at least four grand jury investigations and was accused of tax fraud, improper use of force, arms trafficking and overbilling.

The firm changed its name to Xe Services in 2009 after Blackwater guards in Baghdad were involved in a shooting episode in September 2007 that left 17 Iraqi civilians dead.

The subsidiary that conducted much of the company’s overseas operations and domestic training, Blackwater Lodge and Training Center, was renamed US Training Center Inc.

Blackwater’s then president Gary Jackson claimed that the new name reflected the company’s shift away from providing private security.

“Blackwater’s latest attempt at re-branding itself would be hilarious if the company’s record wasn’t so deadly,” Jeremy Scahill, author of “Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army” said in 2009 when the firm change its name for the first time.

“Blackwater’s deadly record has clearly made the company an international symbol of the out of control violence of the Bush era in Iraq and the rise of modern-day mercenaries, so it is understandable why the company would try to change its name at this moment in history,” Scahill added.

The company was bought in 2010 by the USTC Holdings that once again changed its name, this time to Academi, in an attempt to convince everyone that the company has turned over an “ethical leaf.”

USTC Holdings, however, resumed Blackwater’s original line of work as the new leaders announced plans for maintaining the company’s identity as a security provider.

The antiwar reported in December 2011 that Academi was vying for security contracts with the US and Iraqi governments to re-enter Iraq as its previous license under Blackwater Inc. was taken away after the Nisour Square massacre.
