ABORIGINES are claiming a stake in Tasmania’s forest talks, with a proposal that they be made custodians of big new native forest reserves.
Aboriginal leader Michael Mansell said yesterday under his proposal, 430,000 hectares of reserves would be maintained by the indigenous community, instead of the state’s national parks service.
The plan has been pitched to the Forest Industry Association of Tasmania and state timber agency Forestry Tasmania, which said any agreement would need the backing of the Australian and Tasmanian governments. A land handover would also have to pass through the Tasmanian Parliament.
