Abdullah vows good Pakistan relations

Afghanistan’s leading presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah has expressed his desire for “good neighborly relations” with Pakistan following recent allegations of a plot by Islamabad to assassinate him.

Speaking Thursday to a Washington-based think tank via Skype just two days before Afghanistan’s run-off presidential election, Abdullah said he would seek cooperation with Pakistan, which he noted was facing a challenge similar to that of Afghanistan.

“Today, one harsh reality is that both countries are faced with the same challenges and it is in the interest of both countries to deal with it in a genuine spirit of good neighborly relations,” Abdullah told the Atlantic Council.

His remarks came after outgoing Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s National Security Council accused Islamabad’s spy service of attempting to kill Abdullah.

Last week, Abdullah escaped two bomb attacks targeting him. Twelve people were killed in the attacks.

Abdullah further stated that he would also seek to work with Afghanistan’s other neighbors.

The former Afghan foreign minister was in the lead in the initial round of Afghanistan’s presidential election in April. The run-off vote is scheduled to be held on Saturday.

He also reiterated that he would sign the agreement with Washington that allows the US military to maintain nearly 10,000 troops in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of most of the foreign forces later this year.

President Karzai has refused to sign the agreement.
