Abbott says he’s shed ‘Dr No’ tag

Tony Abbott says he can no longer be called “Doctor Negative” after wishing the prime minister well and congratulating her at a function in Melbourne.

The federal opposition leader and Julia Gillard were in Melbourne on Saturday night and received a warm welcome as they addressed a celebration of Melbourne’s Greek community.

The prime minister took time out from he imminent leadership battle with her predecessor Kevin Rudd and negative opinion polls to talk souvlakis, announcing federal government funding of $2 million towards a Greek studies centre in Melbourne.

Mr Abbott told the crowd he was in a generous mood, before congratulating Ms Gillard on her funding announcement.

“Never let it be said that I never have a good word about our prime minister,” he told the crowd, to cheers of “bravo Tony”.

“Never let it be said that I’m Doctor Negative. I congratulate the prime minister, I wish her well.”
