Border protection costs are going to rise under the federal government’s asylum seeker policy, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has warned.
Mr Abbott was responding to News Ltd reports that it is costing taxpayers up to $1 million to rescue asylum seeker boats that issue distress calls off Indonesia.
Border protection costs already have blown out by well over $4 billion, the opposition leader says.
“It’s just going to get worse and worse until this government finally summons up the courage and introduces the policies that will stop the boats,” he told reporters in western Sydney on Thursday.
