Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has pledged $3 billion to kick-start key road projects in Australia’s two biggest cities should he become prime minister, according to a report.
Mr Abbott has pledged $1.5 billion for the East West Link tunnel in Melbourne, and a further $1.5 billion for Sydney’s M4 East, if elected, News Limited Reports.
Both projects would still require significant funding from the state governments and private sector, with the proposed $3 billion injection to kick-start the projects.
He will pledge the funds at a meeting of the Liberal Party’s federal council in Melbourne on Saturday, according to News Limited.
The Melbourne project is budgeted at $5 billion and will carry around 100,000 vehicles a day between the Eastern Freeway and Western Ring Rd.
The $10 billion M4 project would link the CBD to Sydney’s west.
