Abbott bad but Labor is worse, says poll

The biggest shifts were in Mr Abbott’s personal ratings. His approval fell 5 points to 39 per cent and his disapproval rose 5 points to 57 per cent. This puts him on a statistical equal footing with Ms Gillard, whose approval and disapproval ratings stayed relatively unchanged at 36 per cent and 60 per cent respectively.

Mr Abbott’s rating as preferred prime minister fell 4 points to 46 per cent while Ms Gillard’s rose 2 points to 44 per cent.

The internal polling of both main parties picked up disenchantment with Mr Abbott over the tenacity of his pursuit of Mr Thomson. Labor is trying to reinforce the perception with voters by referring to the Coalition as aggressively negative.

But while the primary vote remains depressed, it is Ms Gillard’s leadership that is at risk.

Voters are still polarised over the prospect of change – 52 per cent say Labor should change leaders, up from 50 per cent a month ago, with 45 per cent opposed, the same as a month ago. Ms Gillard is more popular among Labor voters than Mr Rudd but Mr Rudd is very popular among Coalition voters.

Mr Turnbull remains more popular than Mr Abbott among Labor and Greens voters by a ratio of four to one. But there is now no difference among Coalition voters, who used to favour Mr Abbott. The poll shows 49 per cent prefer Mr Turnbull and 50 per cent Mr Abbott.

Since alternative leaders were polled in October, Mr Turnbull’s support among Coalition voters has risen 4 points and Mr Abbott’s has fallen 5.
