A UK child sexually attacked every 20min

Over 23,000 children in England and Wales fell victim to sex attacks between 2010 and 2011, of whom nearly 1,500 were under the age of six, MailOnline reported.

The figures, obtained under a freedom of information request by the NSPCC — a campaign group seeking to end cruelty to children in the UK, revealed that the total number of sex offences in Britain last year stood at 54,982, of which 23,097 were committed against children.

The NSPCC called on the British government to deal with the situation immediately as only less than 10% of the cases were led to a conviction.

“A concentrated effort has to be made if we are to start reducing this distressing level of offences, many of which are committed on extremely young and helpless children,” said Jon Brown, head of the NSPCC’s sexual abuse programme.

“We also need a clearer picture of what is happening between an offence being reported and someone appearing in court,” he added.
