When I started working with Mondoweiss in 2008 we had two writers—Phil Weiss and me.
Today, Mondoweiss has more than 1,000 contributors sharing the facts from Palestine and Israel: A Thousand Voices for Truth. We are rejoicing at our community’s size and strength, and we’re working to raise $160,000 by year-end to keep the growth going. I’m writing to ask you to celebrate with us—to contribute to help us make our goal.
Do you remember the first meetings you attended to work with others for Palestinian rights? I first became involved in Palestine solidarity during the second intifada in 2000. I vividly remember sitting in a small living room with a few friends, strategizing how to challenge American hostility and indifference toward Palestinians. Some of you, I know, had been fighting for decades already in 2000—but you too, I imagine, went to your share of tiny, intimate gatherings.
And just as vivid is the memory of how isolated and beleaguered we felt. We were fervent advocates for justice, eager to change minds, but it was hard to see a path to those changes.
It’s 2017, and while horrors greet us every day in the news, one thing has visibly improved: the meetings of people committed to justice in Palestine can’t fit in living rooms anymore. We over-flow large lecture halls! And we show up at legislatures, universities, on the op-ed pages and in the streets with increasing strength and frequency. And last month Mondoweiss reported on the first bill for Palestinian rights ever introduced in the U.S. Congress. Long overdue—but real progress.
Credit for our movement’s growth goes to many heroes, over many years. Let me ask you: have you seen the impact of Mondoweiss in that growth?
Phil Weiss started writing impassioned, thoughtful critiques of U.S. foreign policy and the price it exacted from Palestinians back in 2006. And he didn’t stop at just expressing his own thoughts—he sought out experts, talented neophytes, and those steeped in the issue. Today, almost twelve years later, Mondoweiss provides an intellectual home for more than 1,000 writers, artists, scholars and activists. We are so very proud to spread the messages of voices like yours: A Thousand Voices for Truth!
Take Richard Falk, former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Palestinian human rights, whose insights Mondoweiss has published many times. Professor Falk, one of our Voices for Truth, says
Mondoweiss has become the one indispensable source of “real news” about the Palestinian ordeal. It is a matter of urgency to have the information and analysis needed to offset the defamatory campaigns of ultra-Zionist activists and the Israeli Lobby.
Activist Cindy Corrie has also described why she values Mondoweiss:
Mondoweiss is a critical part of the movement for real, lasting justice in the Middle East. What I learn at Mondoweiss strengthens my own activism and keeps me connected to the work that so many others are doing. I’m particularly grateful for Mondoweiss’s coverage informing people worldwide about the role of Israeli courts in whitewashing IDF culpability for my daughter Rachel’s death.
For me, supporting Mondoweiss is a practical way to work for human rights. Please join me to ensure we keep seeing essential news about the violence and brutality visited upon Palestinians, and the struggle against it.
I know that those of you who have donated to sustain the work in the past appreciate the importance of truth-telling about Palestine. Let me remind you of some key stories shared by Mondoweiss in just the past few months:
- November 27: “Bedouin community resists imminent house demolitions,” video by Mondoweiss Editors
- November 2: “Um Abed: Palestinian who embodies Balfour legacy,” by Mohammad Arafat
- November 1: “Machsom: mornings at Checkpoint 300,” video by Peter Morgan
- October 31: “‘His bone turned to sand’: IDF shootings at nonviolent protests,” by Richard Hardigan
- September 23: “At Native American prayer camp, Palestinian refugees share stories,” by Amith Gupta
- September 18: “Palestinian valley destroyed by settlement wastewater,” video by Yumna Patel & Akram Al-Wa’ra
If any of these stories spoke to you—if you shared stories like these to advance the cause of human rights in Palestine—we ask that you give today to keep Mondoweiss going strong.
A group of loyal donors has come together this month to challenge you and the rest of Mondoweiss’s community. They have committed to giving $60,000 if we can raise $100,000 by December 31. That will only be possible with your help. Your gift can get Mondoweiss more than half again as much if we receive your pledge by year-end. Please donate today.
Small gatherings for grand planning are still a key part of our movement—the days of sharing baba ghanoush while developing talking points are certainly not gone. But today, through Mondoweiss and its counterparts, we have a thousand voices reaching many, many thousands more. I hope you will join our challenge donors and hundreds of others in supporting the work now. It cannot be done without you—and with you, it can grow by leaps and bounds.
Adam
P.S. Growth from one voice to a thousand doesn’t just happen. It is possible only with smart planning and the needed resources. Please invest in Mondoweiss to enable more truth-telling for justice in Palestine.
