One in three people will be asleep when Big Ben rings in 2012 tonight, new research has found, with the average Brit going to bed at 10.38pm.

According to to study, only 66 per cent of adults will stay up to see in the New Year. Instead, many of us would rather catch up on sleep than make special efforts to enjoy an ‘overrated’ night.

Many of those going to bed early also said a good evening out on New Year’s Eve was too expensive.

Around 6,000 British adults were quizzed about their New Year plans as part of the study conducted by hotel chain Travelodge. It found that just a fifth will be going out to paint the town red and a quarter of adults will bring in 2012 with family and friends by hosting a traditional New Year’s Eve party at home.

Twenty four per cent of Brits will travel across the UK to bring in the New Year with their family and friends, travelling an average of 60 miles.
Seven in ten of those who are having an early night say they will, nevertheless, have a celebratory tipple.

And eight in ten said they were looking forward to a lie-in, with most sleeping in until 10.30am.

Travelodge spokeswoman Shakila Ahmed said: ‘How we celebrate New Year’s Eve is certainly changing.

‘Our research shows the traditional night of partying is not for everyone.

‘In today’s hectic world, some adults are rejecting a night of fun and frolics in favour of an early night.’

Despite the findings, big crowds are expected to gather in many of the country’s major cities to celebrate the start of 2012. In London, hundreds of thousands of people are set to gather in central London with many coming to the capital to see the London Eye fireworks.

While, in Edinburgh thousands of revellers are expected to join the Hogmanay street party.

We will see in the new year then go to bed soon after. A happy and healthy 2012 to all 🙂

I shall be one of those enjoying an early night, it’s just an arbitrary point in time anyway, and the TV programs will be dire.

Well,I plan to be in bed but won’t be able to sleep thanks to the fireworks and noise! New Year is so over rated.

I saw Sydney let in the New Year at 1300 and it was jaw dropping. Thats it for me.

I’d rather be in my room with Ovid rather than out with the French, Chinese and ‘yah, dahling’ professionals who seem to contaminate central London these days.

I haven’t been out on New Years Eve since 1983. Even then I came home from a packed pub at 10.30. I can’t see what all the fuss is about to be honest. Back in my younger days I was under peer pressure to go out boozing – or I was considered a square. Thank God I learnt to think for myself.

I will be in bed early ready for work in the morning at hospital earning just above the minimum wage. If only I was on benefits with free house, council tax etc I could party all night without having to get up at 5am tomorrow. Dream on.

The Christmas wind up goes on for so long that it is a relief to finally get back to normality again.. I dont exactly feel like leaping up and down and knowing it is expected to kiss and hug everybody in a frenzy of excitemant at 12.00 on new years eve/ january 1st. It may have been fun the first few times in the past but, like Christmas, the novelty wears off after a while!

New Year’s Eve is a Saturday night this year so I was asked out by three guys to parties. I said no because I sit at home alone the other 51 weeks of the year.

Mike, Oxfordshire – you need to move up North lad. The Sunday before each spring/summer bank holiday Monday is more fun than New Years eve.
