A new workout devised for social media junkies

If you’re addicted to fitness and social media, a new class debuting at the upcoming IDEA World Fitness Convention in San Diego caters to both of your passions.

Created by fitness trainer and dedicated tweeter Alexandra Williams, the Klout workout is based on a San Francisco-based company, Klout, which uses a point system to measure a user’s influence across his or her social networks. While there is no connection to the Klout site itself, Williams models her class after the concept — attendees gain points based on their performance in the class — but, she adds, in a “noncompetitive way.”

The class is all about social media themes: At the Foursquare station, for example, students play a round of the playground game four square, all while tweeting away to their friends or posting their whereabouts on Foursquare, the location-based social networking site. Or at the Pinterest station, students bounce on stability balls while pinning motivational quotes to a wall. Plus throughout class, attendees are encouraged to not only tweet but post photos via Instagram and exchange Twitter handles or Facebook pages with other classmates.

“To me, it’s about combining fitness and fun, to bridge that gap because so many people perceive exercise as a punishment or a chore,” said Williams, who also teaches exercise studies courses at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Other novel classes to be presented at IDEA include spinoffs on barre and pole dancing, a Michael Jackson-style cardio class, a surfing simulating group class, and a new dance fitness technique called LaBlast, which incorporates steps from the jive, salsa, cha-cha-cha, and paso doble.

Now in its 30th year, the IDEA World Fitness Convention, which runs July 5-8, is one of the largest and oldest trade events for fitness professionals. More than 5,000 influential fitness and wellness professionals from 65 nations will participate in hundreds of sessions devoted to new fitness trends.
