What does every odd political, cultural, social, and international dispute currently taking place around the world look like, in just one map?
Well this map doesn’t show everything, but it is a start.
Each of these red markers simply and snarkily indicates some unusual or unique phenomenon — for example, the quasi-sovereign nations living within the United States, or the not-really-policed tri-state smugglers zone between Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina.
Some you’ll recognize, like the “stateless nations” Kurds in the south Turkey, north Iraq area. Others might be new; like Abkhazia, the “barely recognized puppet state” just between Russia and Georgia. (Read more on Abkhazia and other not-yet-real countries here.)
Others you’ve always wondered about, like the non-soverign country of Greenland.
Others still are complete head scratchers: Is the Netherlands a kingdom or a Kingdom with collected countries within it?
Phew.
The map was designed by Stanford Professor Martin Lewis. Check out his full post explaining the map, its definitions, and its geo-political complexities.
Lewis explains, “As the title indicates, only a selection of geopolitical anomalies are indicated on the map. Many more are ignored, including the Basque nationalist movement, the Catalan nationality seeking status as a nation, the British bastion of Gibraltar, and the Spanish North African exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla — and that is merely for Spain and environs. In regard to colonial remnants, those of France are emphasized, as they are particularly extensive, scattered, and of diverse geopolitical status.”
“A comprehensive map would have to be so involved as to be virtually unreadable,” Lewis says in his post.
