‘9/11 victims remains dumped in landfill’

The remains were reportedly of victims of the 2001 attack on the Pentagon and a plane crash in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Retired General John Abizaid, who is in charge of the independent review of the practices at the Armed Forces Mortuary at Dover Air Force Base (AFB), briefed Pentagon reporters on Tuesday, saying it was unclear how many victims’ partial remains were disposed of in this manner.

The report contradicted a 2011 US Air Force account that claimed there were no records showing how remains at Dover were handled before 2003.

The mortuary is notorious for mishandling the remains of some American troops killed in the US-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Dover AFB is where the remains of deceased US armed forces first arrive home from overseas.
