9 killed in North Caucasus clashes

A spokesman for Russia’s National Anti-Terrorist Committee said on Monday that special forces of the FSB security agency together with police killed five militants and one woman accomplice in the Kabardino-Balkari territory of the Caucasus region.

Two more militants and a female accomplice were also killed in a separate operation in the city of Makhachkala in the nearby region of Dagestan, according to the spokesman.

Senior militant Eldos Zulfugarov, also known by his nom-de-guerre Abdullah, was reportedly among the dead in the second incident, which ended after he and other insurgents had been holed up inside a residential building since Sunday.

No casualties were reported for government forces.

Sporadic attacks and militant clashes are common in Russia’s North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan, and Ingushetia.

Russia has been fighting various waves of insurgencies in the North Caucasus since the early 1990s, despite the official end of the “battle phase” of the Second Chechen War in 2000.
