81% of Brits slam govt. for fuel panic

A devastating poll for The Independent on Sunday showed that eight out of ten people blamed the coalition government for sparking a needless panic-buying ahead of the threatened fuel tanker strike that swept across the country as petrol pumps ran dry.

The devastating result came after a top Tory MP admitted that the fuel panic was provoked by the criticized government to deflect attention from the country’s worsening economy and the furore over the Tory’s efforts to convince donors to give £250,000 for a meal with the Prime Minister.

“My feeling is this was to try to take people’s minds off donors, the Budget and pasties – and the Government added to the heat,” senior Tory MP Bernard Jenkin said.

The survey conducted by ComRes also revealed that 72 per cent of those being polled thought that the Tory-led government is “out of touch with ordinary voters.”

It also appears that the coalition is losing its credibility, as the survey disclosed that 60 per cent of the people do not trust the PM and his Chancellor to make the right decisions to improve the economy. The figure increased from 49 per cent in only two weeks.

The Labour party also condemned the government’s handling of the strike, with shadow chancellor Ed Balls believing the government had been playing “political games” in recent days and deliberately incited petrol panic to distract attentions from anti-Tory headlines.

Meanwhile, Labour MPs called for the resignation of Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude, who came at the center of political storm after he told the drivers to fill up their jerry cans with petrol and keep in their garages to beat off the impacts of the tanker strike.

His advice then led to a disaster, as a woman from York suffered serious burns to her body when she was transferring petrol between canisters in her kitchen.
