The strong quake struck 431 kilometers (268 miles) off the city of Banda Aceh in Sumatra Island on Wednesday, sending residents pouring from their homes in panic.
The epicenter of quake was at 2.0430 degrees north latitude and 92.5180 degrees east longitude. There are no reports of casualties yet.
A tsunami alert was issued for countries across the Indian Ocean and that the tremors of the quake were felt in Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh, Malaysia and India.
In 2004, a powerful 9.1-magnitude quake triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, including 170,000 in Aceh.
