72 arrested in Sydney shoplifting blitz

A five-day crackdown on shoplifting in Sydney has led to 72 arrests.

Redfern police coordinated Operation Lightfingers from last Tuesday until Saturday in major retail outlets in the CBD, nearby Broadway and Bondi Junction in the city’s east.

In total 92 charges were laid and police recovered about $18,500 in stolen goods during the blitz.

In one incident, a 22-year-old man was caught on CCTV in a Sydney department store allegedly stealing two sets of sheets.

Police say he came back the following day, wearing the same clothes, to steal another two sheet sets worth $1200.

He was arrested and allegedly found to be in possession of cannabis.

In another incident, on Saturday, Operation Lightfingers police who stopped a 20-year-old woman in a Sydney store discovered she was wanted on a warrant.

She was arrested and charged with breach of parole.

The acting commander for Redfern Region Enforcement, Detective Acting Inspector Matt Francis, said police were vowing to work together with private security staff to stamp out retail theft.

“Prospective shoplifters should be aware that police and loss prevention staff are dedicated to stamping out thefts and this behaviour won’t be tolerated,” Det Insp Francis said in a statement.
