Sid Shafner, a 94-year-old WWII veteran, was in his early 20’s when he and his fellow soldiers crossed into the Dachau Concentration Camp in southern Germany. Miraculously, they liberated 30,000 prisoners and brought them to safety. That was in 1945.
71-years-later a wonderful reunion took place. With the help of a special program “From Holocaust To Indepdence”, Shafner was brought together with some of the men he saved. The reunions occurred in Poland and Israel.
The most meaningful was between Shafner and 90-year-old Marcel Levy.
Levy was one of the men freed by Shafner. Even more than that, Levy helped Shafner free even more prisoners. They have stayed in touch since the war but haven’t reunited in over two decades.
Both parties couldn’t have been more eager to meet in person once again. When they’re ‘introduced’ and are able to shake hands, the exchange is truly beautiful. One of the most touching moments of the entire trip is when Levy said, “You know, everything I have today… it’s because of you.”
During their moving reunion, Levy even presented Shafner with a plaque that read, “You came like a warrior angel … and carried me into the light.”
Sid Shafner, 94, was recently honored at a Holocaust remembrance ceremony for his hand in liberating over 30,000 prisoners from the Dachau concentration camp in southern Germany in 1945, according to ABC News.
The emotion, gratitude and care between the two men is overwhelming.
