The quake struck near the tourist resort of Acapulco on Tuesday, causing residents to pour out into the streets, the US Geological Survey reported.
It hit about 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the town of Ometepec, knocking out phone and power lines.
The magnitude was downgraded in later reports from 7.9 to 7.6 and later to 7.4.
Although no tsunami alert was issued, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of possible “local tsunami effects”.
In 1985, an 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck Mexico City, claiming the lives of between 6,000 and 30,000 people.
