6 Brits believed dead in Nairobi siege

After emergency Cobra committee meeting over Kenyan hostage crisis, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said British officials are pretty certain that six Britons have died in the attack.

Four Britons, including dual British-Australian national Ross Langdon, had been confirmed dead earlier by the Foreign Office.

“Of the additional two, one is confirmed and another one we believe to be a British national and we are awaiting final confirmation,” he added told the BBC.

A British businessman, named Louis Bawa, said his eight-year-old daughter and his wife were among the dozens killed during the attack.

Hammond also warned that the death toll is likely to rise “once the building is fully secured”.

Dozens of men armed with guns and grenades attacked the Westgate Mall in Nairobi on Saturday, 21 September and targeted people indiscriminately, killing at least 62 people and injuring many others.

According to media reports the Somali-based al-Shabaab militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
