The quake took place at 2.07 a.m. local time Monday and was centered about 116 kilometers east-southeast of Santiago del Estero city, the provincial capital.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the temblor, local police said.
On March 5, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake also shook northern Argentina, about 112 kilometers east-southeast of Santiago del Estero.
The Argentinean city of Santiago del Etero has a population of 245,000.
