An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 has been recorded inside North Korea, hours after Kim Jong-un boasted it was ready to test new advanced nuclear weapons.
According to senior South Korean military officials, the quake was caused by Pyongyang conducting its sixth nuclear test.
The earthquake struck 34 miles northwest of Kimchaek, close to where the country’s Punggye-ri nuclear test facility is located.
China’s Earthquake Administration said it detected a 6.3 magnitude tremor that was believed to have been caused by the powerful H-bomb.
Wow — “6.3 is a megaton.” USGS saying this was a 6.3. That would be the level of a hugely powerful H-bomb. https://t.co/pVAuBApVv7

According to Reuters, eight minutes later a second quake was detected in North Korea of magnitude 4.6.
The coordinates of the two quakes were almost identical, according to figures provided by the administration.
Witnesses in the Chinese city of Yanji, on the border with North Korea, said they felt a tremor that lasted roughly 10 seconds, followed by an aftershock.
AP reports:
North Korea conducted its fifth test last year in September. In confirmed, the latest test would mark yet another big step forward in North Korean attempts to obtain a nuclear-armed missile capable of reaching deep into the U.S. mainland.
It came hours after North Korea claimed that its leader has inspected the loading of a hydrogen bomb into a new intercontinental ballistic missile.
The U.S. State Department had no immediate reaction.
North Korea conducted two nuclear tests last year and has since maintained a torrid pace in weapons tests, including flight-testing developmental intercontinental ballistic missiles and flying a powerful midrange missile over Japan.
We will have more updates as they become available.
