Thirty five people have been injured in a collision between a high-speed ferry and a cargo ship in Hong Kong waters.
Authorities said the ferry, which was carrying 162 passengers and eight crewmembers, collided with a Chinese cargo vessel just off the southwestern Cheung Cha Island late on Wednesday. The cargo ship was reportedly carrying seven people.
The ferry, operated by Shun Tak-China Travel Ship Management Ltd., reportedly collided with the cargo ship at around 11 local time, about half an hour after its departure from Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan.
According to reports, 35 people with minor injuries were taken from the damaged ferry to hospitals. No casualties, however, were reported on the cargo ship.
A police spokesperson told AFP that the high-speed ferry later arrived at its terminal on Hong Kong Island while the Chinese vessel was still at the scene.
Officials are now investigating the cause of the incident.
Earlier this month, at least 11 crewmembers of a Chinese cargo ship went missing after it collided with a container vessel and sank off the coast of southern Hong Kong.
Moreover, in November last year, a high-speed ferry travelling from Hong Kong to Macau collided with an “unidentified object” injuring 87 people.
